What to do in the Aisne in summer? 10 activity ideas I especially loved
Every summer, I love taking the time to rediscover the Aisne. People sometimes think of it as a low-key part of France, but it's actually full of treasures: charming villages, historic sites, unspoilt nature and activities for all ages.
Here are 10 activity ideas that I've tried and enjoyed myself, perfect for making the most of a summer stay in the Aisne.
1. Stroll around the medieval town of Laon
The first time I went up to Laon, I felt as though I'd stepped back in time. The hilltop town overlooks the whole plain, and its cobbled lanes really make you feel like you're on a medieval film set.
The cathedral is impressive, and the little café terraces are perfect for a break with a magnificent view over the surrounding countryside. In summer, the atmosphere is especially lovely for a wander at the end of the day.
2. Discover Art Deco in Saint-Quentin
I was surprised the first time I discovered Saint-Quentin. The town has a remarkable Art Deco heritage, rebuilt after the First World War.
Walking around the town centre, you can admire many colourful, decorated façades. The architecture is truly unique in the region, and it makes for a very pleasant summer stroll, between heritage and lively cafés.
3. Spend a day at the Lac de l'Ailette
When it's hot, I love going for a walk around the Lac de l'Ailette. It's perfect for a stroll, a picnic or simply enjoying the view over the water.
You can also try various water sports or relax in the dedicated areas.
4. Enjoy a relaxing day at Center Parcs
Next to the lake is Center Parcs Le Lac d'Ailette. Even without staying there, you can sometimes enjoy some of the activities.
The Aqua Mundo is very popular, especially with families with children. It's a great idea for a relaxing day if the weather is a bit unpredictable.
5. Explore the Chemin des Dames
Another outing that really stayed with me was discovering the Chemin des Dames.
This place, steeped in history, now offers wide, open and peaceful landscapes. In summer, the roads and footpaths are beautiful, letting you discover both history and nature.
6. Visit the ruins of Coucy-le-Château
The village of Coucy-le-Château-Auffrique is home to the impressive ruins of an old medieval fortress. Events are held there every season
Walking around the ramparts and through the village's little streets is really enjoyable. The place has a very special atmosphere, especially at sunset.
7. Discover the villages of the Thiérache
The Thiérache area is known for its fortified churches and green landscapes. It's a lovely idea for a summer day out, combining heritage and nature.
The country roads take you through some very pretty villages and let you enjoy a calm, authentic atmosphere.
8. Go for a bike ride in the Aisne countryside
The Aisne is perfect cycling country. The roads are often quiet and the landscapes very open. It's a simple but very enjoyable way to discover the region at your own pace.
9. Enjoy the local summer markets
In summer, I love wandering around the local markets. You'll often find regional produce, seasonal fruit and a friendly atmosphere. It's also a great chance to discover local specialities and put together a good meal to share.
10. Simply enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside
Sometimes my favourite activity is the simplest one: taking time.
Reading on a terrace, sharing a meal outdoors, chatting late into the evening… These moments are often among the best holiday memories.
An ideal base for discovering the Aisne
One of the advantages of a stay in the Aisne is that many of these places are within easy reach of one another.
